PARENTS GUIDE TO HEALTHY CHILD

CHILDHOOD WHEEZING AND WELLNESS TREATMENT SERIES.

Q & A

1-What are common presentation of cold and cough at childhood ?

INSIGHT-Acute viral nasopharyngitis, or acute coryza, usually known as the common cold, is a highly contagious, viral infectious disease of the upper respiratory system, primarily caused by picornaviruses or coronaviruses.

Common symptoms are sore throat, runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing and cough; sometimes accompanied by muscle aches, fatigue, malaise, headache, muscle weakness, mouth breathing or loss of appetite. Fever ,recurrent tonsillitis and extreme exhaustion are more usual in influenza. The symptoms of a cold usually resolve after about one week, but can last up to 14 days. Symptoms may be more severe in infants and young children. Although the disease is generally mild and self-limiting, patients with common colds often seek professional medical help, use over-the-counter drugs, and may miss school or work days. The cumulative societal cost of the common cold in the United States is billions of dollars.

Our opinion at Drsatsangis wellnessclinic’s opinion-No foolproof vaccines are available: the primary method to prevent infection is hand-washing to minimize person-to-person transmission of the virus. There are no antiviral drugs approved to treat or cure the infection. Most available medications are palliative and treat symptoms only. Megadoses of vitamin C, preparations from echinacea, and long term homoeopathic medicines under qualified professional have been studied as treatments for the common cold although the results vary from individual to individual and from one doctor to other doctor.

2-Why it is important to deal with ensuing cold infections quickly, what shall prompt you to actively consult physician

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS- Talk to your doctor if you experience any of the following:

  • The symptoms worsen or do not improve after 7 to 10 days
  • Breathing difficulty develops
  • Unusually severe cold symptoms
  • High fever
  • ear pain
  • Sinus type headache
  • Cough that gets worse while other cold symptoms improve, or
  • Flare-up of any chronic lung problem, such as asthma.

Although common colds are seasonal, with more occurring during winter, there is no evidence that short-term exposure to cold weather or direct chilling increases susceptibility to infection.

With respect to the causation of cold-like symptoms, researchers at the Common Cold Centre at the cardiff university conducted a study to "test the hypothesis that acute cooling of the feet causes the onset of common cold symptoms."It concludes that the onset of common cold symptoms can be caused by acute chilling of the feet, but that "further studies are needed to determine the relationship of symptom generation to any respiratory infection.

Uncontrolled infection may lead to- The common cold can lead to opportunistic coinfections or superinfections such as acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis, croup, pneumonia, sinusitis, otitis media, or strep throat, viral pneumonia, full bloom influenza. People with chronic lung diseases such as asthma and COPD are especially vulnerable. Colds may cause acute exacerbations of asthma, emphysema or chronic bronchitis.

Q-How and why are common cold infections so common in school going and community attending individuals?

Ans-The common cold virus is transmitted between people by one of two ways:

  1. Through the air from aerosols containing the virus created by coughs or sneezes, or
  2. From contact with the saliva or nasal secretions of an infected person, either directly or from contaminated surfaces.
The infectious period (time during which an infected person can infect others) begins about one day before symptoms begin, and continues for the first five days of the illness. Symptoms, however, are not necessary for viral shedding or transmission, as a percentage of asymptomatic subjects exhibit viruses in nasal swabs. The virus enters the cells of the lining of the nasopharynx (the area between the nose and throat), and rapidly multiplies. The major entry point is normally the nose, but can also be the eyes (in this case drainage into the nasopharynx would occur through the Nasolacrimal duct).Since virulence(infection) is intense,it spreads fast in communities like auditorium, closed offices/classrooms,and sometimes appears as pandemic(many people at one time
Q-WHAT ARE ORGANISM IMPLICATED IN COLD INFECTIONS, HOW BAD MAY BE SUPER OR ADDED INFECTIONS?

INSIGHT-Upper respiratory tract infections are the most common infectious diseases among adults who have two to four respiratory infections annually. Children may have 2 to 6 colds a year (and up to 10 colds a year for school children). In the indian subcontinent, the incidence of colds is higher in the start of winter and during cold night and hot days of end summers, with most infections occurring between august to April. The seasonality may be due to the start of the school year, or due to people spending more time indoors (thus in closer proximity with each other) increasing the chance of transmission of the virus.

Most common colds are caused by infection by rhinoviruses. Other viruses causing colds are coronavirus, human Parainfluenza viruses, human respiratory syncytial virus, adenoviruses, enteroviruses, or Metapneumovirus. The common cold can lead to Oppurtunistic coinfections or Superinfections such as acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis, croup, pneumonia, sinusitis, otitis media, or strep throat. People with chronic lung diseases such as asthma and COLD are especially vulnerable. Colds may cause acute exacerbations of asthma, emphysema or chronic bronchitis.

Q-WHAT MAKES OUR CONSULTANTS TOSAY ‘ ALLOPATHY AND NEXTDOOR PEDIATRICIAN MAY NOT BE USEFUL IN CONTROLLING OVERALL AND AVERAGE FREQUENCY AND INTENSITY OF COLD COUGH AND INFECTIONS’ EXCEPT HIS UTILITY MAY BE LIMITED FOR SERIOUS COMPLICATIONS ONLY OR OTHER CONDITIONS COMING OUT OF NEGLECTED CASE?

INSIGHT-More than one-third of patients who saw a doctor received an antibiotic prescription, which not only contributes to unnecessary costs ($1.1 billion annually on an estimated 41 million antibiotic prescriptions in the United States), but also has implications for antibiotic resistance from overuse of such drugs,Antibiotics do not have any beneficial effect against the common cold. Their use in cases of common cold infection is ineffective and may contribute to antibiotic resistance of bacteria present in the patient's body. There are no approved antiviral drugs for the common cold with pedatrician according to one authority,It’s unclear whether the benefits of regular antibiotics course during outweigh the risks.

Q-WHY OUR CONSULTANTS OPINES OF BETTER ADVANTAGES AND SAFETY OF HOMOEOPATHY OVER CONSERVATIVE TREATMENT?

Ans- Homoeopathy uses very small doses of medicines which are innocuous, safe and causes no toxic effects even if accidently child consumes in excess ,homoeopathic treatment in long term were found more effective in dealing with overall morbidity and acute severe respiratory infective episodes,in one study the children who are on regular homoeopathy under qualified professionals were recorded with less seasonal illness, absence from school, raised attentiveness, this all was summed up by saying the correct and regular homoeopathic treatment raises child immunity so that regular episodes lessens and are less severe. We at drsatsangis wellness clinic prompts parents to proactively approach our consultants for any help, for more active information and consultation you may log on to our forum at drsatsangis wellnessclinic.com totally free of cost.

Few tips for healthy respiratory system—

Avoid unnecessary antibiotics: The more people use antibiotics, the more likely they are to get sick with longer, more stubborn infections caused by more resistant organisms in the future.

  • Breastfeed: Breast milk is known to protect against respiratory tract infections, even years after breastfeeding is done. Kids who don't breastfeed average five times more ear infections.
  • Avoid second-hand smoke: Keep as far away from it as possible! It is responsible for many health problems, including millions of colds.
  • Get enough sleep: Late bedtimes and poor sleep leave people vulnerable.
  • Drink water: Your body needs fluids for the immune system to function properly.
  • Eat yogurt: The beneficial bacteria in some active yogurt cultures help prevent colds.
  • Take zinc: Children and adults who are zinc-deficient get more infections and stay sick longer
  • Regular intake of homoeopathic preparations ‘influenzinum’ helps to cut short the infections and reduces the overall infection rate.

Skin that is damaged by acne scars requires very gentle products. Make sure you choose cleansers or lotions that are not abrasive. If you wash your face too roughly or use abrasive products, your skin will become even more irritated. You should also make sure to use sunscreen that is oil-free whenever you venture outside. Oil-based products will clog your pores even further and make the acne even worse.

Using peels on a regular basis is another way to help reduce acne scarring. Most peels contain a low percentage of salicylic acid which will help to improve your skin condition. You should use a peel 1 to 3 times per week and maintain the regimen over an extended period of time for best results.

The face is the front part of the human head, encompassing the area from the forehead to the chin, and from ear to ear. Providing this area with routine care is beneficial because it keeps the facial skin healthy and looking its best.

Proper care of the facial skin involves gently washing the skin to remove dirt, sweat, cosmetics and oils, maintaining proper hydration, and avoiding products that cause irritation. Soaps and moisturizers are skin care products commonly used on the face. People may benefit from knowing the type of skin they have because a number of facial skin products are designed for use on particular types of skin. Skin types include dry skin (skin lacking water), oily skin (skin with excess amounts of oil), balanced skin (skin that is neither oily nor dry), combination skin (skin consisting of oily areas as well as dry or balanced areas) and sensitive skin (skin that is easily irritated). People’s skin type may also dictate how often they should wash their face

About facial skin

The face is the front part of the human head. It encompasses the area from the forehead to the chin, and from ear to ear. Since the skin on the face is especially noticeable, people can provide the area with routine care to keep the skin healthy and looking its best.

There are a variety of skin types. People may benefit from knowing the type of skin they have because a number of facial skin products (e.g., soaps, moisturizers, cosmetics) are designed for use on particular types of skin. Skin types include:

  • Dry skin. Skin becomes dry when it lacks water. Dry skin is easily irritated. People with this type of skin frequently have dry hair, as well as small pores. Although dry skin is usually associated with a reduced risk of acne, it usually becomes more wrinkled with age than oily skin. Though some people only develop dry skin occasionally, others experience the condition continuously. Dry skin develops most often in the winter, when the combination of cold air outside and heated air inside causes low humidity. A person’s skin also becomes drier as they age.
  • Oily skin. This type of skin contains excess amounts of oil (sebum). People with this type of skin often have oily hair, as well as large pores. Although they are more likely to develop acne, people with oily skin usually develop wrinkles later in life than those with dry skin. Heredity and hormones contribute to whether or not a person has oily skin.
As with dryness, the oiliness of a person’s skin can vary from day to day. Factors such as the sun and the wind can contribute to oiliness. Weather can also cause oily skin. For example, hot and humid weather can contribute to perspiration. Sweating causes the skin to appear oilier than it would during colder weather.
  • Balanced skin. Balanced, or “normal” skin, is neither oily nor dry. It is typically smooth with fine texture. People with this type of skin have few skin problems.
  • Combination skin. This type of skin consists of oily areas, such as the on the forehead, nose and chin, and other areas that are balanced or dry.
  • Sensitive skin. This type of skin is easily irritated. It may be oily or dry. People with sensitive skin may have allergic reactions to cosmetics and other skin products. Sensitive skin may also become dry after using a certain soap, or oily after using a certain type of lotion. These reactions are often triggered by additives, such as dyes and perfumes.

Proper care of the facial skin involves gently washing the skin to remove dirt, cosmetics, sweat and oils, maintaining proper hydration, and avoiding products that cause irritation

Homeopathy does not advocate the use of creams and ointments in skin disorders. It believes that skin disorders are a reflection of inside and need to be treated from within. Another strong opinion that homeopaths propagate is that any external application can lead to the suppression of the disease and result in a more serious systemic disorder. A well-prescribed homeopathic medicine not only takes care of hyperpigmentation but also treats as a whole and improves general health as well.

Homoeopathic medicines treat the hormonal imbalance and thus control the excessive production of melanin. The texture of the skin also improves. The occurrences of new patches reduce and ultimately stop. The skin slowly reverts to its normal condition without leaving any blemishes.

General precautions for people suffering from hyperpigmentation: stay out of the sun so that these areas don’t darken even more. If you can’t avoid the sun, wear hats, cover up. Along with it, eat a well-balanced diet, avoid cosmetics, avoid direct exposure of skin to sunlight and please do not self-medicate.

Sun protection

Protecting your skin from the sun is important because the sun emits ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Over time, UVR exposure causes many changes in the skin, including wrinkles, discoloration, freckles or age spots, benign (non-cancerous) growths, and pre-cancerous or cancerous areas. In fact, most skin cancers are related to sun exposure.

UVR consists of two main subtypes: UVB and UVA. UVB rays are responsible for sunburns and tanning. UVA rays are believed to be responsible for photoaging--the damage that occurs to the skin from many years of exposure to the sun--and possibly for promoting cancer. Most sunscreen products available in the past were developed to prevent sunburns by blocking UVB rays., sun protection recommendations emphasize certain behaviors, as well as the use of sunscreens. The recommendations include:

  • Avoiding midday sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Wearing wide-brimmed hats, long sleeved shirts and pants
  • Using a generous amount of sunscreen and reapplying it frequently (every 2-3 hours)
  • Using sunscreens that have a sun protection factor (SPF) greater than 15, and that have UVA and UVB coverage
  • Avoiding tanning beds

In addition to gentle cleaning products, you should use products specifically made for treating acne scars. These items are usually available in cream or gel form and are made to reduce the appearance of your scars. Some acne scar skin care products may even feature ingredients to help lighten the color of the scars, making them less visible to the eye. .berberis aquafolium based preparation. will reduce the dark brown areas resulting from certain scars. You can also try a lightener that is available with drsatsangis clinic if your facial discoloration is not as pronounced.they come in the form of facial maskings which may be applied as a paste mix with honey/jojoba oil/distilled water /almond oil and attenuator which may be prescribed by our doctors.

The earlier you begin taking steps to treat scars, the less likelihood you will develop severe permanent scarring later on in life. You can start to use gentle cleansers, oil-free sunscreens(optional), weekly peels(masking powders) and vanishing homoeopathic treatment creams. With time and effort, your scars should eventually start to fade.

  • USEFUL DIET TIPS ON DAILY SCHEDULE-
  • Use cucumbers to tone your face. You can use either thin slices or the juice. Apply and leave on your face for 10 to 20 minutes and then rinse thoroughly.
  • Use skim milk powder in place of cold cream to wash your face. It is great for all skin types. Be sure to rinse your skin thoroughly after use.
  • If you wish to give yourself a head to toe moisturizing treatment, or a facial to alleviate dry skin, purchase a light, virgin olive oil from the local grocer's. Almond oil or avocado oil may also be used for fantastic results. Put a few drops of the oil of your choice in a small container and add a few drops of your favorite natural scent. Lavender is great. After your bath or shower and while your skin is still moist, massage the oil into your skin and around your fingernails and cuticles. When finished, you can run your fingers through your hair, if desired. This treatment nourishes skin, hair and nails.
  • While running your bath, pour one cup of powdered skim milk into the bath water. Milk gently exfoliates your skin and leaves it soft.
  • Relax in an oatmeal bath while it works magic on your skin. Pour 1/2 cup of whole oats into a piece of cheesecloth and fasten securely. Add to your bath water. Oatmeal softens and exfoliates your skin.
  • To remove elbow discoloration, use lemon juice. Apply the juice to your elbows and leave it for 20 minutes. Rinse. Do this daily until discoloration disappears.
  • For puffy eyes, place thin, cool slices of cucumber on your eyes. Leave for 15 minutes and remove. The puffiness will vanish magically. Grated potato will also remove puffiness from your eyes.
  • To take away shine from facial skin, use 10 drops of lemon juice to 1/2 cup of water. Dab the mixture onto your face with a cotton ball or soft cloth. Do not remove.
  • To condition your hair, heat 1/2 cup mayonnaise in your microwave for approximately 15 seconds. Apply to dry hair, cover with a plastic bag and leave it for 20 minutes. Remove the plastic bag; rinse your hair with warm water and shampoo, as normal. Your hair will look terrific.(OPTIONAL-speak with our consultants)
  • If you'd like your makeup to stay fresh for hours, spritz your face with mineral water and allow to dry thoroughly. Do not wipe. Apply makeup, as normal. It will look fresh all day.
  • If you aren't happy with your makeup remover, use almond or sesame oil. Apply the oil with a cotton ball or soft cloth. Almond and sesame oil will remove all traces of makeup, including waterproof mascara quickly and easily.
  • Give yourself a moisturizer treatment just like the one that you'd receive at the spa. Wash your face well and while it is still wet, rub a small amount of petroleum jelly into your skin. Continue to mix small amounts of water with the petroleum jelly until it is evenly spread and no longer has a greasy appearance. You will be amazed at the softness and appearance of your skin.
  • Mix two parts of coarse salt with one part of virgin olive oil to the juice of one lemon. Massage it into your skin while you shower. Rinse, pat dry and apply a natural moisturizer.( applicable for healthy skin and take advise from our consultants before trying)
  • For soft, beautiful hands, wash them in lukewarm water before going to bed. Cover with a generous amount of petroleum jelly, slip on a pair of white cotton gloves and retire. In the morning, remove the gloves, and wash your hands well. You'll be amazed at the results. .
  • Remove wrinkles with seedless grapes. Cut grapes in half, crush gently and apply to wrinkles on your face and neck. This helps remove dryness and wrinkles from delicate skin.
  • For a dry skin facial, beat two egg yolks in a small container and apply them to your face with a soft cloth or cotton ball. Avoid your eyes. Leave for 15 minutes without speaking. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. Egg yolks tone and tighten facial and neck skin. (please check your sensitivity and allergy skin).

The key to performance enhancing nutrition is plant-based whole foods. The less a food has been refined the better. The body has to work hard to extract nutrients from refined foods, which requires energy; therefore the energy value of the food becomes greatly reduced. Chronic hunger is common when the diet is rich in over processed foods and lacking nutrient rich ones.

Whole Grains Whole grain, the staple of most diets worldwide, offers the benefit of long-term storage because of its low-moisture content and hard husks. Most grains are made of starch, and consist of 75% carbohydrates. The starch contains 25% of the amylose, with sweet rice and corn containing mostly amylopectin. Grain also consists of 10% protein and 2-3% fat (mostly unsaturated fatty acid). The embryo bud(germ wheat/sprouted moong) contains antioxidant vitamins E and B, essential for carbohydrate metabolism. Grains also contain a good amount of phosphorus and potassium.

Brown Rice

Brown rice, which only has its exterior-most chaff removed, differs greatly in nutritional value from white rice, which consists only of the rice albumen. Rice chaff contains vitamin B1, effective in preventing beriberi, plus other vitamins, carbohydrates, protein, lipids, minerals, and fiber. Brown rice contains four times more fiber and vitamin B1 content than white rice, and two times more lipids, phosphorus, and iron.

INFORMATION ON CAUSES/NUTRITION IN VITILAGO

About 1 to 2 percent of the world's population, or 40 to 50 million people, have vitiligo. In theVitiligo (vit-ill-eye-go) is a pigmentation disorder in which melanocytes (the cells that make pigment) in the skin, the tissues that line the inside of the mouth and nose and genital and rectal areas (mucous membranes), and the retina of the eyes are destroyed. As a result, white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body. The hair that grows in areas affected by vitiligo may turn white(leucotrichia). The disorder affects all races and both sexes equally.Vitiligo seems to be more common in people with certain autoimmune diseases (diseases in which a person's immune system reacts against the body's own organs or tissues)The cause of vitiligo is not known, but doctors and researchers have several different theories. One theory is that people develop antibodies that destroy the melanocytes in their own bodies supported by raised c-rp/ and associated antinuclear antibodies/rheumatoid like diseases/autoimmune thyroiditis /connective tissue disorders and SLE alopecia areata (patches of baldness), and pernicious anemia (a low level of red blood cells caused by failure of the body to absorb vitamin B12).. Another theory is that melanocytes destroy themselves. Finally, some people have reported that a single event such as sunburn or emotional distress triggered vitiligo; however, these events have not been scientifically proven to cause vitiligo. However, most people with vitiligo have no other autoimmune disease.

Vitiligo may also be hereditary, that is, it can run in families. Children whose parents have the disorder are more likely to develop vitiligo. However, most children will not get vitiligo even if a parent has it, and most people with vitiligo do not have a family history of the disorder.

People who develop vitiligo usually first notice white patches (depigmentation) on their skin. These patches are more common in sun-exposed areas, including the hands, feet, arms, face, and lips. Other common areas for white patches to appear are the armpits and groin and around the mouth, eyes, nostrils, navel, and genitals.

Vitiligo generally appears in one of three patterns. In one pattern (focal pattern), the depigmentation is limited to one or only a few areas. Some people develop depigmented patches on only one side of their bodies (segmental pattern). But for most people who have vitiligo, depigmentation occurs on different parts of the body (generalized pattern). In addition to white patches on the skin, people with vitiligo may have premature graying of the scalp hair, eyelashes, eyebrows, and beard. People with dark skin may notice a loss of color inside their mouths.

There is no way to predict if vitiligo will spread. For some people, the depigmented patches do not spread. The disorder is usually progressive, however, and over time the white patches will spread to other areas of the body. For some people, vitiligo spreads slowly, over many years. For other people, spreading occurs rapidly. Some people have reported additional depigmentation following periods of physical or emotional stress.

The change in appearance caused by vitiligo can affect a person's emotional and psychological well-being and may create difficulty in getting or keeping a job. People with this disorder can experience emotional stress, particularly if vitiligo develops on visible areas of the body, such as the face, hands, arms, feet, or on the genitals. Adolescents, who are often particularly concerned about their appearance, can be devastated by widespread vitiligo. Some people who have vitiligo feel embarrassed, ashamed, depressed, or worried about how others will react.

Strategies to cope with vitilago-

Several strategies as per senior consultants at ‘DRSATSANGIS WELLNESSCLINIC’ ,First, it is important to find a doctor who is knowledgeable about vitiligo and takes the disorder seriously. The doctor should also be a good listener and be able to provide emotional support. Patients need to let their doctor know if they are feeling depressed because doctors and other mental health professionals can help people deal with depression. Patients should also learn as much as possible about the disorder and treatment choices so that they can participate in making important decisions about medical care. Some people with vitiligo have found that cosmetics that cover the white patches improve their appearance and help them feel better about themselves. A person may need to experiment with several brands of concealing cosmetics before finding the product that works best.

Drmanish satsangi, senior consultant at drsatsangis wellnessclinic opines the goal of treating vitiligo is to restore the function of the skin and to improve the patient's appearance. Therapy for vitiligo takes a long time--it usually must be continued for 18 to 36 months. The choice of therapy depends on the number of white patches and how widespread they are and on the patient for proper individual strategy adopted in preference for treatment. Each patient responds differently to therapy, and a particular treatment may not work for everyone. Current treatment options for vitiligo include medical, surgical, and treatment options with homoeopathy and other therapies.homoeopathy is safest and efficient modalities with conservative approaches he further adds.

The ascorbic acid tends to reduce melanin pigmentation. So the patients are restricted to take the citrus foods. Non vegetarian foods are also to be avoided as they act as a foreign body to pigment cells. It is better to avoid even the milk and milk products. Greens and Red Radish, Beetroots, Carrots and Black dates may be taken. They could change the physiology and biochemistry of the skin with their natural pigments

A nutritious, well-balanced, healthy diet is strongly recommended in cases of vitiligo. It is even more important than supplements. It can help balance your immune system and protect you from disease. It will also help recover from skin discoloration by providing essential vitamins & minerals that take part in the process that leads to the formation of new pigment. Recently a group of compounds known as phytochemicals have been the focus of research. They have been proven to protect against cell damage and disease. The following is a list of recognized foods with powerful natural chemicals that will boost your skin capacity to recover and stay healthy. No supplement can substitute a rich diet. A "vitiligo diet" may include:

  • Whole-grain food (great source of fibers, vitamins, minerals and "oligoelements").
  • Spinach (loaded with iron, and folic acid, helps reduce blood levels of homocysteine, a substance that may damage blood vessels. It contains phytochemicals that help prevent degeneration (ex. macular degeneration in the eye) and protect your skin.
  • Broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, etc. - Contains abundant phytochemicals (good, protective substances found in vegetables and fruits) that may prevent skin cancer and balance the immune response, vitamin C, beta-carotene (it should not be overcooked).
  • Vegetables of different colors - Each one contains different types of phytochemicals plus vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.
  • Different sources of protein (if possible include fish and soy products).
